Stress is one of the leading causes of short term absence from work for both manual and non-manual workers, and is probably the leading cause of long term absence. Research conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) indicates that work related stress accounts for over a third of new incidences of ill health with an estimated total of 13.8 million working days lost to stress, depression and anxiety in 2006/07. Workplace stress can be responsible for reduced productivity, high staff turnover, poor decision-making, accidents and a hostile work environment.

Tackling the issue of workplace stress is not just desirable – employers have a legal duty to assess the risk of stress-related ill health arising from work activities and put in place measures to control those risks if they are to avoid litigation.
